Mount Amiata

Roccalbegna is the town of reference for the Aia della Colonna; it is a small village perched on the slopes of the Amiata, dominated by the “Sasso” a huge rock that towers above the town and from which the Albegna River, the largest in the area, has its source. The village is delightful with medieval remains and the Romanesque Church of St. Peter (12th cent.). Amiata is the mountain that dominates the entire Maremma, at 1738 meters above sea level, divided between the provinces of Grosseto and Siena it is rich in charm and history. Equipped with excellent winter facilities, very suitable for a day of skiing without necessarily having to reach the Alps. But, equally attractive in summer for long walks through the woods in search of mushrooms and quiet. The capital of Amiata is Arcidosso, a very functional town with a lovely historic center to visit. A few kilometers away, however, is Santa Fiora with its Peschiera and the source of the Fiora River, the largest in the area. Also of interest are, Casteldelpiano and Abbadia San Salvadore (Siena side). For beautiful nature hikes around Mount Amiata, we recommend visiting the Pescinello Nature Reserve (near Roccalbegna), the WWF Oasis of Bosco dei Rocconi (near Semproniano) and the Mount Amiata Wildlife Park.
